Getting Started 

These four classes will introduce the novice writer to the tools needed to complete engaging fiction. We will discuss plot character development, dialogue, point of view while you complete a short story. Readings, in-class writing exercises, and feedback will be used to help you complete a short story, or novel chapter. No previous writing experience is needed for this course.

Cole Lavalais’ short stories have appeared in The Offing, ObsidianApogeeWarpland,Tidal Basin Review and others. Her novel, Summer of the Cicadas, debuted in 2016. She holds a M.F.A. from Chicago State University and a Ph.D. from University of Illinois at Chicago in Creative Writing. She is a Visiting Writer at Mississippi University for Women and has taught writing for thirteen years.
